About the Publisher

Founded on September 2, 1986, in Olinda (PE), with the name Sociedade Brasileira de Fisioterapia Respiratória (SOBRAFIR), the association originated during the 3rd International Symposium on Respiratory Physiotherapy (SIFR), created in 1983. Since then, SIFR has consolidated itself as its main scientific activity and a reference space for updates and knowledge exchange.

In 1994, during the 7th SIFR held in Salvador (BA), the first specialist titles in Respiratory Physiotherapy were granted. Since 2012, these exams have been endorsed by the Federal Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (COFFITO). In addition to Respiratory Physiotherapy, recognized in 1998, COFFITO regulated two more specialties linked to ASSOBRAFIR: Intensive Care Physiotherapy (2011) and Cardiovascular Physiotherapy (2015).

In 2009, ASSOBRAFIR launched its scientific journal, ASSOBRAFIR Ciência, today the Brazilian Journal of Respiratory, Cardiovascular, and Critical Care Physiotherapy (BJR), aimed at disseminating research and promoting technical and scientific knowledge in the areas it represents.

In 2022, the association updated its name to fully reflect the three specialties it represents nationally, adopting its current name: Brazilian Association of Respiratory Physiotherapy, Cardiovascular Physiotherapy and Intensive Care Physiotherapy (ASSOBRAFIR).

Headquartered in São Paulo (SP), ASSOBRAFIR has 20 Regional Units—distributed across all states and the Federal District—and six Representation Centers, strengthening its presence throughout the national territory.

Its mission is to represent Respiratory Physiotherapy, Cardiovascular Physiotherapy, and Intensive Care Physiotherapy, promoting professional excellence and defending the quality of healthcare at all levels of care. Its vision is to be the representative association of these specialties in all Federal Units of Brazil, seeking excellence in its actions. Its values are tradition, ethics, quality, science, and responsibility.
